Why Is It Worth Traveling These US States By Car

Some parts of the United States are simply better experienced from the road. Flying can get you from one major city to another quickly, but it often means missing the small towns, scenic highways, state parks, and unexpected stops that make a trip memorable.

Traveling by car gives you the freedom to change your plans, explore beyond the usual tourist areas, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

If you are planning your next vacation, these states are particularly rewarding to explore behind the wheel.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin is an excellent choice for a road trip because its attractions extend far beyond its largest cities. Milwaukee provides a natural starting point, with museums, breweries, restaurants, and a scenic location on Lake Michigan.

From there, you can head north toward Green Bay or continue into areas known for forests, lakes, and outdoor recreation. Door County is another popular destination for a slower-paced trip, offering waterfront communities and plenty of places to stop along the way.

Having a vehicle also makes it much easier to explore rural Wisconsin, where some of the most enjoyable destinations are not conveniently reached by public transportation. If this state is a long distance from home, you do not necessarily have to drive the entire way just to have your vehicle available when you arrive. You could fly to your starting destination and arrange to transport your car to Milwaukee or another suitable starting point ahead of your trip.

California

Few states offer as much variety for a road trip as California. You can experience beaches, mountains, deserts, forests, vineyards, and major cities within a single journey.

The Pacific Coast is particularly well suited to driving, allowing you to stop at coastal communities and viewpoints instead of simply traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Inland routes can take you toward national parks and mountain scenery.

The size of California means careful planning is worthwhile, but it also makes the state ideal for travelers who want a longer adventure.

Colorado

Colorado is another state where having your own transportation can completely change the experience. Denver is a convenient starting point, but much of the state’s appeal lies outside the city. Driving gives you access to mountain towns, hiking areas, scenic routes, and national parks. Depending on the season, you can build a trip around outdoor activities, sightseeing, or simply enjoying the mountain landscapes.

Weather conditions can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations, so always check forecasts and road conditions before setting out.

Arizona

Arizona offers some spectacular driving routes, particularly for travelers interested in dramatic landscapes. A road trip can take you between Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon while providing plenty of opportunities for stops along the way. Having a car also gives you more freedom to visit smaller destinations and natural attractions that would otherwise require organized tours or complicated transportation arrangements.

Make the Journey Part of Your Vacation

Traveling by car gives you something that flights and fixed itineraries cannot always provide: flexibility. You can stop when something catches your attention, stay longer in a town you enjoy, or change your route entirely.

Whether you choose Wisconsin’s lakes, California’s coastline, Colorado’s mountains, or Arizona’s desert landscapes, exploring by car can turn transportation itself into one of the best parts of the vacation.
